Switch mats next to force plates

Force plates tell the story. The mat lets you live in it.

Switch mats are showing up next to force plates in college football weight rooms, not replacing them. The plate gives you the deep force profile. The mat gives you contact time, flight time and RSI in real time, on every rep, at group speed. Here is how Tulsa football runs both.

Force plates show us the full force story but the Plyomat lets us live in it. With real-time contact time, flight time, and RSI, we can coach, compete, and adapt on every rep. One gives us depth; the other gives us density. Together they turn testing into training.

Two instruments, two jobs

A force plate and a switch mat answer different questions. The plate is the periodic deep read. The mat is the thing the whole group stands on every day. Neither one is trying to be the other.

The force plate
Depth

The full force-time curve, on a testing day. The kind of read you take on a schedule, sit down with, and program from.

  • Force-time curve eccentric and concentric phases
  • Rate of force development how fast force is built
  • Impulse and net force the physics behind the number
  • Left and right force dual plates, asymmetry
  • One athlete at a time a monthly or block-by-block test
Together
The Plyomat
Density

Contact time and flight time on every contact, scored and on the wall before the athlete has turned around. Enough reps, fast enough, to coach from.

  • Contact time to the millisecond, every rep
  • Flight time and jump height every rep
  • RSI, live the score every coach already reads
  • DRI on drop jumps comparable across box heights
  • Two mats, a whole group rep after rep, at training speed
Every rep

What the coach sees the moment the athlete lands

This is what "live in it" means in practice. Each contact on the mat lands on the screen as a scored rep, so the cue happens on the next jump, not next week. The athlete sees it too, which is where the competing starts.

Plyomat 3.0 live screen: the reactive strength quadrant on the left, the rep stream on the right with contact time, jump height and RSI for each rep
CT
Contact time
Measured on the mat, to the millisecond
FT
Flight time
Take-off to landing, the same clock
JH
Jump height
Computed from flight time
RSI
Reactive strength
Jump height ÷ contact time
DRI
Dynamic rebound
(DH + JH) ÷ (g × CT²)

The rep stream on the right of the screen is the "every rep" part: each contact lands as its own row with contact time, jump height and RSI. Every score comes from two measured times, the contact and the flight that follows it. Demo athletes shown.

Testing into training

Where each one sits in the week

01

Test on the plate

On the schedule. The full force profile per athlete, the read that sets the block: where the deficits are, who needs what, what the target is.

02

Train on the mat

Every session. The group cycles through, every contact is timed and scored, and the coach cues stiffness, intent and landing off a live number instead of an eye test.

03

Read both in the app

Every rep is saved to the athlete. Trend RSI and contact time across the block, then bring the next plate test back to the same names and see whether the training moved it.

The system Tulsa runs

The Portable System

Two mats, the Controller 3.0, the cables and the app. It sets up in a minute, runs a group through drop jumps, 10/5s and countermovement jumps, and travels in a bag. The software is free and stays free.

  • Two 28×14" switch mats
  • Controller 3.0
  • Mat and device cables
  • Plyomat 3.0 app, iOS and Android
  • Connect the mats or run them separately
  • Every metric on this page, on every rep

Questions

Plates and mats

Does the mat replace force plates?
No, and that is the point of this page. A force plate measures force directly and gives you the full curve. A switch mat measures time: when the athlete leaves the surface and when they land. From contact time and flight time it computes jump height, RSI and DRI. Programs that own plates run the mat for daily volume and keep the plate for periodic depth.
How accurate is the timing?
Contact time and flight time are measured to the millisecond by the switch mat and the Controller 3.0. See the validation page for how that has been checked against reference systems.
How fast can a group move through it?
As fast as they can jump. There is no per-rep reset, no calibration between athletes and no export step. Pick the athlete, they jump, the rep is scored and saved. Two mats lets two lines run at once.
What does the app cost?
Nothing. The Plyomat 3.0 app is free for every owner, with no subscription, no seat limits and no paid tier for the metrics. Buy the hardware once.
