Basketball Standards

Four tests that tell you what a basketball player actually has underneath him: standing vertical, approach jump, 10/5 RSI, and single-leg max RSI. Built from four years of high school basketball testing on the Just Jump mat and on Plyomat in JJ mode. Print them, hang them in the weight room, and let the athletes find their own line.

Why these four

A vertical alone is half the picture.

Standing vertical tells you how much force an athlete can produce when he has time to organise. Basketball rarely gives him that time. The approach jump shows what survives once he is moving, 10/5 RSI shows how fast he turns landing into takeoff, and single-leg max RSI catches the limb that quits first. Squat numbers are deliberately absent: it is not a test you can run on a mat, so it does not belong on a sheet built around one.

The sheets

Three ways to grade an athlete.

Every sheet is free, print ready, and yours to hang. The letter version fits a binder, the 11×17 poster is sized for a wall, and the centimetre version carries the same standards in metric.

Male varsity

Six levels, from Developmental through World Class, for high school varsity boys. Values are printed in inches and centimetres side by side.

By age, 11 to 18

Median standing vertical climbs roughly a foot between 11 and 18, so one table calls a strong younger athlete Developing and a soft older one Elite. Four age bands, three levels, graded against his own age. Track him against himself from there.

Reading the numbers

Two conventions worth knowing.

JJ mode is the jump-and-reach equivalent a Just Jump mat reports. It runs higher than a flight-time-only figure, so a 30 inch vertical here is not the same 30 inches you would read off a different device. Legacy RSI is flight time divided by contact time, which is the convention these sheets use and the one most coaches already have years of data in. Standard RSI divides jump height in metres by contact time and produces much smaller numbers. Neither is wrong; mixing them is.

What is a good vertical jump for a high school basketball player?
On the male varsity sheet, 30 to 34 inches is Advanced and past 38 inches is World Class. On the female varsity sheet, 23 to 25 inches is Advanced and past 28 inches is World Class. Both are measured in JJ mode, so compare like with like before judging a number.
Why are there separate sheets by age?
Median standing vertical climbs roughly a foot between age 11 and 18. One varsity table therefore calls a strong younger athlete Developing and a soft older one Elite. The by-age sheet grades against his own age band, which is the fairer read for anyone below varsity.
What is 10/5 RSI?
The Reactive Strength Index from a ten-second repeated hop test scored on the best five contacts. These sheets use the legacy convention, flight time divided by contact time, which is what a Just Jump mat reports.
Where do these standards come from?
Aggregate testing on high school basketball athletes across four years, on the Just Jump mat and on Plyomat in JJ mode. They are assessment guidelines rather than a published normative study, and they are protocol dependent. Hold one protocol across retests and track an athlete against his own history.
